Match the shoe to the surface. Road running on tarmac calls for cushioned midsoles that absorb repeated impact. Mixed routes with murram and trail sections favour firmer shoes with deeper tread. If most of your training happens in the gym, a flatter, more stable trainer beats a soft road shoe.
Fit matters more than brand. A running shoe should hold your heel firmly while leaving about a thumb's width of space ahead of your longest toe — feet swell on the run, and a too-snug pair guarantees black toenails. When in doubt, go half a size up from your everyday shoes.
